It’s a testing time for the Indian cricket team. Tensions fill the air as the environment becomes ripe with strife. Situation is so bad that an explosion of sort is inevitable. Change is imminent and of the utmost importance. Something has to give, things have to be shifted around, plans have to be rethought but the problem lies in the fact that no one has a clue as to what should be done. Any way you go, egos are going to be bruised and sentiments going to be hurt. But what has to be done has to be done. We are talking about the future of the Indian cricket after all.
The first thing to be changed would be the leadership or the management. Since the management is the one making the alterations, it is natural that the captain would be the first person to go. No matter what the fault, the captain is usually at the receiving end of all the blame. He is the one who is supposed to have everything under control, so it is natural that one looks up to him to make the right decisions and lead the team to victory. In the wake of an unexpected and unfortunate outcome, the captain gets a lot of flak.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been an outstanding Captain to date. He has conducted himself gracefully, morally and sensibly, without leaving room for criticism. He has been a beacon of light to the whole of Indian cricket-dom even during the darkest periods of cricket. But since the Indian tour of Australian in 2012, people are beginning to question his role as a skipper. India’s performance during the tour was absolutely shameful but how much the captain had to do with it, one can only estimate. And it is based on these assumptions that he is being hogtied and burned at a stake. Now that his position might open up in the near future, two of the team’s best are caught in a race to be the next captain- Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli.
These are two players who have shown impressive statistics over the years and also has considerable experience with the team. Virat Kohli has been a steady performer in the cricket match, showing consistency in all variations of cricket. But Gautam Gambhir profile has not been up to the standards these days with a subtle decline in form. It is yet to be seen who will fill Dhoni position, considering it is some pretty big shoes to fill.
